Embracing Fall: A Bucket List of Simple Seasonal Pleasures

Fall is my favorite season and one of the things I miss most about the Midwest. In Texas, although the temperature may drop by 10 degrees, it can still be warm, with temperatures in the 80s and 90s. I would even say fall is a matter of perspective in Texas because we don’t experience the same fall weather as the northern states.

In the Midwest, there’s crisp air, cooler temperatures, and colorful fall leaves. There’s something magical about fall, a familiar cycle we experience every year.

The start of the school year seems to extend its influence beyond the classroom, inspiring us to restart our intentions and reset something in our lives.

I thought I would share a Fall Bucket List that perhaps you can use for yourself. Do one activity or do them all! Take this time to savor the change and enjoy the simple pleasures of the season.

Fall Bucket List:

Take a walk and enjoy looking at the different-colored leaves.  Collect a few leaves and make them as bookmarks.

Attend a sporting event. Cheer your favorite team!

Enjoy a farmers market.  Peruse the fall fruits and vegetables, and pick some up to change up your dinner options.

Pick up some pumpkins.  Carve a pumpkin or use some pumpkins to decorate your porch!

Take a scenic drive.  Stop when you find interesting spots for pictures!  Stop for coffee if you discover an interesting coffee shop along the way!

Spend a quiet morning on the porch.  Watch the sunrise, drink some coffee, and take this time to reflect and reset your intentions or renew a commitment to yourself.

Start a bonfire with friends.  Gather family and friends safely around a bonfire and get some marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate to top the evening off.  Please make sure to check for burn restrictions in your area before planning a bonfire.

Support the community.  Organize a coat drive or pet food drive in your neighborhood to help others.

Bake a fall favorite.  Make an apple crisp, pumpkin bread, or cinnamon muffins. Enjoy the wonderful aroma filling your home!

Have a cozy reading afternoon.  Curl up with a good book, a favorite blanket, and a warm drink. Give yourself permission to enjoy a quiet afternoon.

Host a simple fall gathering.  Invite a few friends over for soup, chili, or a potluck dinner. Nothing elaborate—just good food and conversation.

Create a fall floral arrangement.  Combine sunflowers, chrysanthemums, or seasonal greenery in a vase. It’s an affordable way to bring the season indoors.

Visit a fall festival or craft fair.  Explore a local festival, admire handmade goods, and enjoy the atmosphere. You don’t have to buy anything to have a good time.

Set one intention for the season.  Take a few minutes to reflect on what you’d like to accomplish, change, or make more time for before the year ends.

Enjoy a fall movie night.  Choose a favorite seasonal movie with family or friends. Make some popcorn, and settle in for a cozy evening.

Reconnect with someone.  Call an old friend, write a handwritten note, or invite someone you haven’t seen in a while to coffee.

That’s a lengthy list, but it’s meant to generate ideas for how you can embrace fall. Choose one activity or create your own tradition, and enjoy the season.

Write a letter. Put pen to paper and send a thoughtful note to someone you care about.

I may not get a traditional Midwest autumn anymore, but I use this time of year to embrace the “fall mentality,” Texas style, and enjoy simple activities, meaningful connections, and new traditions.

Fall may look a little different depending on where you live, but the opportunity to enjoy the season is always there.
